A FORGED RUSSIAN MEMO

This is where the plot thickens and new-school digital meets old-school Cold War tactics. What the United States did not realize was that Russia was about to unleash an old-school Russian spy tactic—a document that was a masterful forgery.

In the early part of 2016, FBI agents were sent what was believed to be a set of documents hacked by Russia. An analysis commenced to review what Russia had stolen to determine what Russia knew. One item, which has been described as an e-mail or memo written by a Democratic operative, said that the US Department of Justice would not thoroughly investigate then–presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The memo specifically mentioned that Attorney General Loretta Lynch would keep the investigation from going too far.12

Later forensics determined that this document was a planted forgery that is now considered a manipulation and misinformation campaign planted by Russian cyber operatives to create a reaction. It is believed that then–FBI director James Comey was prompted to take action upon receipt of this forged memo, in conjunction with the discovery of previously undisclosed e-mails belonging to right-hand Clinton aide Huma Abedin, on her husband’s computer. Comey’s next step was to notify Congress that the FBI had recently discovered new e-mails and would be reopening the investigation. “Clinton has said the disclosure, which dominated media coverage in the days leading up to the election, factored heavily into her loss.”13
